Flowers and Greens - Newsletter # 4 - October 20, 2005

1.

Handling costs are now reduced to zero. The USPS now has a free pick up policy that saves me a 22 mile round trip to our local post office and saves you $2 for handling. Shipping charges for up to 10 lbs of plant materials will not exceed $7.70 (USPS flat rate Priority Mail)

2.

One new selection will be introduced in the late spring of 2006 in limited quantity until stock has been fully developed. It is named Pacific Sunrise because the bright yellow and orange floret colors are somewhat reminiscent of sunrises near the sea when the skies are free of haze (see picture below). Note that the colors also complement those of Pacfic Sunset. Price is set at $12 per clump.

3.

Also, scheduled for sale in late 2006 are seedling clumps of A. caryophyllaceae, an aromatic alstroemeria species whose aroma is detected by some gardeners, me included, but not by others, several co-workers. Aroma or no it is a beautiful alstroemeria (see picture below). There is a relatively long history to my interest in this species, first because of its reputed aroma, and secondly, after 14 years of failure in growing it at UC Davis, from a clone that I purchased from a Connecticut nursery, why I could not grow it. I suspected that the clone was diseased but had no proof of that. Then 4 years ago a piece of caryophyllaceae, probably something remaining in a bed from one of the original trials, began growing and flowered…that was the first time I had seen caryophyllaceae in bloom and thought it was as beautiful as any alstroemeria I had grown.

So I immediately divided the clump that was in bloom and hoped to double my pleasure. Instead I lost everything. Then last year someone recommended a Brazilian source for seed of the species and that proved a marvelous breakthrough. All of the seedlings developing from the seed appear vigorous and should bloom in the greenhouse sometime this winter.

Aroma or not, caryophyllaceae is a beautiful alstroemeria (see picture below) and if the seedlings from the Brazil seed source continue on their current path I will be able to see seedling variation in type of inflorescence and evaluate vigor. Price has not been set, but will be determined by vigor.

4.

Summer growing, richly pigmented (yellow, light to dark pink, red-streaked, and cream) callas will be offered for sale in limited quantities in the fall of 2006 at $2.50 per corm.

Good gardening,  dirty hands and all,  Roy
