Flowers & Greens Newsletter # 5 June 2006

Alstroemerias: The long interval between newsletters is due in part to the very long, wet winter and early spring; this slowed evaluation of vigor and appearance of new alstroemeria selections.

Pacific Sunrise and Lipstick are available in limited quantities now (but they are increasing rapidly), so I expect to have many more available for sale in 2007.

Cream Burgundy is another selection showing promise and likely to be introduced in 2007; the cream is a strong white over yellow admixture with burgundy segments on the backsides of the petals.

The Whitish selections remain too slow-growing to make generally available but I have filled a few requests for them, using a backorder file to notify clients whenever they are ready for digging and sale. So, if whitish is what you want please order and I’ll keep the same kind of backorder file that I have had for two years.

I am now testing Alstroemeria caryophyllaceae and two other Brazilian species for vigor and viability in two climates; some seedlings of the caryophyllaceae have a faint aroma (nowhere near as potent as a carnation as suggested by its name).

A blue-purple selection is growing fairly well and a few may be available in 2007. I’ll post this in the next newsletter.

Sparaxis (possibly tricolor), Ixia (sp. unknown), and Gladiolus liliaceus: I may have a small supply of these cormous species available for sale in 2007 at $0.60@.

In general I can say that I enjoy and appreciate hearing from those of you who have had success or failure with the alstroemerias. Reports of failure are of benefit to me in diagnosing problems and in advising clients.

For those with dirt permanently under their fingernails I can match you and then some.
