Flowers & Greens Newsletter # 6 Fall 2007

   1. Freesia alba: As I suggested in the April newsletter, the F. alba crop was so damaged by frequent January freezes that I had none for sale this year. Some, about 100 or so, are ‘threatening’ to come back and I will have a few for sale in 2008. I estimate another 2 years before I’m again in full production; always assuming that I will add freeze protection by this month and not lose them when we have unusually frequent episodes of sub-freezing weather.

   2. I have just begun increasing two yellow alstroemeria selections. One, pictured below, is a light lemon yellow; it has a more yellow aspect than I captured in this photo. The second selection is more of a yellow-gold, similar to that of the yellow aurea but with more anthocyanin pigments; it seems to be a lighter yellow-gold version of Pacific Sunrise. Neither of these selections will be available for sale until 2009.

   3. I have recommended to customers that they choose selections other than Alstroemeria aurea and ligtu because these are both less vigorous than I think desirable for any gardener (or for me), and also both have a long non-flowering period (in some cases they appear dormant) from late summer through early spring.

   4. Finally, I must apologize; the website was not operational for about 2 weeks due to a technical problem. The problem has now been fixed by the webmaster. Thank you very much for your understanding.
